Alum Rock Counseling Center (ARCC) understands as students go back to virtual classrooms many stories will be written on what the generational impacts of the COVID-19 crisis will be. We also expect many questions will arise on how those impacts can be mitigated. To help journalists and reporters tell this story, we want to make our CEO and clinical program directors available for comment to educate the public on what is being done to address the looming mental health crisis and to share the important expertise we have attained over decades of mental and behavioral health services provided at our public schools.
Rising cases of COVID-19 have led to the continuance of online instruction in Santa Clara County through at least the first trimester of the 2020-2021 academic school year. As families continue to live in overcrowded homes and increasingly struggle to meet their financial obligations and basic needs, intrafamilial abuse and other kinds of conflicts are on the rise. This dynamic will further traumatize students and worsen what was already a difficult mental health crisis in public education. Alum Rock Counseling Center is preparing to face this worsening crisis head on by moving our programs online where possible and providing our employees the protections necessary to keep them safe during any emergencies that require in-person care.
Since 1974, ARCC has served high-need communities throughout Santa Clara County, with a focus on the Latino and immigrant populations in East San José. Its 13 mental/behavioral health and educational support programs address a range of risk factors including truancy/school failure, trauma, juvenile delinquency, gang activity, drug/alcohol use, and family violence. ARCC currently supports 10,000+ low-income youth (ages 0-21) and families annually, providing services in homes, in 50+ high-need schools, in our East San José clinic and now, during the pandemic, via telehealth.
